CALL FOR WORKSHOPS AND PAPERS  
Migration is currently one of the most prominent political issues both at national and supranational levels, inviting reconsideration of policies and redefinition of social inclusion. Migration is also prominent in academic debates that cross disciplines and involve experiences and politics at local, regional, national and international levels. Migration affects local social processes and individual lives in ways that call for new perspectives and discussions of place, belonging and community-making.  

We invite scholars to present and discuss their research on the economic, political, social and cultural impacts of migration, with focus on Nordic countries in themselevs and in broader international comparisons. Results of empirical research engaging both qualitative and quantitative methods are welcome, as are critical examinations of concepts and methodologies.  

The global challenges of economic restructuring prompt a variety of (trans)national, regional and local responses that affect integration or non-integration of migrants into the labour market and the role of migrants in the processes of urban restructuring. These challenges also necessitate new practices regarding undocumented migrants, especially with concern to their health. We welcome workshops and papers on those issues. With regard to the strong welfare character of Nordic states, the interplay between formal and informal levels may be of special interest.  

We further invite participants to scrutinise the political stances conditioning migration policies, national and international legislation, citizenship and various forms of local political membership. The conference’s overall focus on social and cultural impacts and potentials of migration allows for both institutional and individual perspectives, with themes such as transnational organisations and grass-root practices, migration and education, migration and language, migration and memory, media representations and media use, children and family life, religious practices and religious organisations.    

TO PROPOSE A WORKSHOP, please submit the workshop title and a 300-word abstract, together with 200-word abstracts for at least three papers (with the titles and the names of paper-presenters) included in your workshop. The number of papers is not limited.  

TO PROPOSE A PAPER in any of the topics mentioned above, please submit a 200-word abstract. The conference organizers will see that your paper is placed in one of the appropriate workshops.

The organisers will inform about acceptance of papers by 30 April 2010.  

The conference will start on 25 August at 10.00, and end on 27 August at 15.00.
