Centre for welfare state research

The international conference "Cross-disciplinary Perspectives on Welfare State Development", organized by NCoE NordWel and the Centre for Welfare State Research, University of Southern Denmark, will take place in Odense, 14-16 June 2012.

Scholars from different backgrounds both within and outside the Nordic countries are invited to participate in discussing the development of the welfare state, its preconditions, present status and how we ought to study it.

Welfare states have and can be studied from a number of theoretical and methodological approaches, with various chronological perspectives and with a focus on different empirical phenomena. With this conference it is the aim of the organizers to stimulate cross-disciplinary and multi-perspective discussions. They intend to bring together Ph.D. students and senior scholars from different disciplines and to stimulate a discussion that will challenge and maybe bring the participants beyond well established concepts and understandings.

The organizers welcome proposals for exciting papers that deal with welfare and the welfare state in a broad historical and contemporary perspective from disciplines such as sociology, history, social policy, political science, political philosophy etc. Papers can be both theoretical and empirical in their approach. They can deal with national or transnational themes or have a comparative perspective.

Key note speakers include: Sigrun Kahl (Yale University), Ann Orloff (Northwestern University), Matthieu Leimgruber (University of Geneva) and Jørn Henrik Petersen (University of Southern Denmark).

Participation in the conference is free of charge (including accommodation).
