REASSESS organises its second major conference 18-20 May in Oslo to give all the researchers participating in the various strands of the centre an opportunity to meet and present their work so far. The main goal of the conference is to promote integration between the different activities within REASSESS.
‘Reassessing the Nordic Welfare Model’: TAKING STOCK OF THE WORK SO FAR
Time: 18 - 20 May, 2009 Venue: Soria Moria Hotel, Oslo
VISIT THE OFFICIAL CONFERENCE WEB PAGE FOR UPDATES, WORKSHOP PROGRAMME AND PAPERS
Parallel sessions where participants discuss papers will take up most of the time of the conference. Through these parallel sessions and a few plenary sessions we wish to identify and analyse issues cutting across the themes of individual strands and issues of relevance for the Nordic welfare model’s prospects and relations to other models of welfare. Such broader and transversal issues include:
- ‘Demographic ageing’ (and interactions with gender, family / parent-child relations, ethnicity - NWM implications for care, well-being & economic security in old age, responses in public policies)
- Privatisation’ (marketisation, outsourcing, new forms of governance, regulatory policies, new public management, shift towards new public/private mixes in services and economic risk protection)
- ‘Globalisation’ (NWM sustainability & factors of competitiveness, incl. equality as asset or liability)
- ‘Migration’ (implications of its different forms)
- ‘Universalism & equality’ (ideals under pressure)
- ‘Marginal groups’ situation as “quality-tests" of the NWM’ (children, migrants, persons with disabilities, elderly persons, low-skilled persons, the poor, intersectionality, etc)
- ‘Forces of divergence and convergence’ (both within the Nordic group & in relation to non-Nordic countries / groups)
The organisers invite and encourage participants to write joint papers - across strands, institutional attachments and countries. Our intention is that all papers will be available at the conference webpage at least a fortnight before the conference.
