Short summary:
The aim of this study is to understand the connections between the family´s economic situation and children´s everyday lives. Topics covered are how children enjoy school and their school performance, their access to and participation in leisure activities, and their relationships with friends. The main focus is on children´s own experiences and children are the unit of analysis as well as the main informants. However, as parents are best informed about certain aspects of children´s living conditions, parents are also included as informants. A sample of low-income families has been drawn (based on income statistics from 2000). For comparison, we have also drawn a smaller control sample with families in all income groups. 1937 parents and 779 children were interviewed in 2003.We contacted the same families in 2006 and interviewed 1300 parents and an equal number of children. In addition to the quantitative panel, qualitative interviews were carried out in 2003 with parents and children in 26 low-income families.
